compatibility adding a new server with different CPU to the cluster.

Hello Everyone,

I need your help before we submit an order for a new server,

currently we have a 2012 R2 failover cluster that consist of two Dell T610 servers (Xeon x5660), we like to add a new Dell R620 server (Xeon  E5-2680) to the cluster, the new server will have more RAM and different CPU model with more cores and cache , same thing with network adapters  they are the same brand but newer model (Broadcom 5720) instead of existing (Broadcom 5709).

I read that Microsoft recommend same server or ones with similar components, but we are not sure , how this compatibility/similarity rules are strict and what cluster features they will effect ?

I can imagine live migration will be the most sensitive feature to this difference, but how about failover, where a VM will need to be moved from a failing host and rebooted into a new host ?

we can accept losing the live migration feature to/from the new server, but we need to have the ability for VMs

to failover between all the servers including the new one, and I can imagine the guest OS on the VM will need to update it is CPU to match the model of the host, but that is the only thing I can think of now?

I hope to get some answers and advise from the experts here..Thanks.

Misbah
