The specified disk or volume is managed by Microsoft Failover clustering component. The disk must be in cluster maintenance mode and the cluster resource status must be online

Hi

I am running a 2 node Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V Failover cluster using Dell MD3400 SAS Storage Array with an MD1220 Expansion Enclosure which is configured as a single disk of 22TB. On the cluster there are a number of VM's which use a Cluster Shared Volumes.

Our Creative Team and Video Editing Team share a 10TB disk and they are now running out of space. I have just added another 15TB of disks to our Dell MD1220 giving us 37TB in total. Looking in Disk Management on the Disk owner I can see the 15TB Unallocated space, however I can't extend the disk as when I try I get "The volume cannot be extended because the number of clusters will exceed the maximum number of clusters supported by the file system" - this, I think is because it was set up with the Default Allocation Unit Size.

Due to this, I tried to create a new 15TB partition in the Unallocated space but got the following error: "The specified disk or volume is managed by Microsoft Failover clustering component. The disk must be in cluster maintenance mode and the cluster resource status must be online". I have tried looking for some information on this, but most of it is for Windows 2008/Chkdsk/Defrag operations.

So my question is:

  1. Do I need to turn off my VM's that have disks on the 22TB Partition and put into maintenance mode, before I create an additional 15TB partition?

Thanks
Tony
