New disk will not come online in Windows 2012 Cluster nodes.

I have two Windows 2012 Server nodes in a Windows cluster setup. The cluster has two disks which are DATA & QUORUM. I need to present a new disk to the server and eventually add it to the cluster, but I can't do it.

The nodes are VMware virtual servers running in a VMware V6.2 enterprise environment. The existing 2x disks are on a VNX5400 SAN and the new disk I'm trying to add is on a new UNITY400 SAN.

I created the new disk/LUN on the UNITY SAN and presented it to the 2x nodes of the Windows cluster as an RDM disk. I then logged onto the active node of the cluster, opened Computer Manager and selected Storage\Disk Management. I then refreshed the view and could see the new disk in the list. Great.

But not great, the disk is offline with a red arrow on the disk icon and the status is set to "Reserved". I tried to bring the disk online but got the error:

"The specified disk or volume is managed by the Microsoft Failover Clustering component. The disk must be in cluster maintenance mode and the cluster resource status must be online to perform this operation."

The puzzling part is that the disk was just added to the node and was never presented to the cluster so how is this possible?
