Windows Server 2012 Cluster Validation Failing On List All Potential Cluster Disks

$

I'm in the process of setting up a new cluster using Windows Server 2012 with a view to migrate from our existing 2008 R2 cluster.  I am having problems validating the storage and the wizard keeps failing on the List All Potential Cluster Disks test (which causes all the other storage tests to be cancelled).

I'm getting the following error:

Failed while verifying removal of any Persistent Reservation on physical disk 19ba99a4 at node RC-HYPERV-3.riddlesdown.local.

When I look in validation report, disk 19ba99a4 is the management LUN (Access LUN 31 as termed by the storage software).

Looking on my 2008 R2 cluster this doesn't appear in Disk Management.

Any ideas how I can get rid of it or the error that it is causing?

I have a script that creates a powershell command.  The below command is not working correctly.  I cannot find much if any documentation on how to set multiple dependencies in powershell.  All of my other dependencies set without a problem, just this one with multiples.

Set-ClusterResourceDependency -cluster cluster_name -resource "SQL Server (SQL_GROUP)"  -Dependency "[E_Drive] and [E_Drive_log01]"

Disk volumes / partitions

Hi all, hope you will be able to help me with this.

Windows 2008 R2 failover cluster with 2 nodes.

I have 1x SAN disk that I have used to create 2 different partitions on with separate drive letters. These drives should be used for 2 SQL instances. Our SQL team therefore needs to have these 2 drives in separate cluster resource groups. When I add them to the cluster the cluster sees it as 1 cluster disk with 2 partions.

Is there anyway I can set this up so the cluster sees each partition as a separate disk, in order for me to add them to different resource groups?

From what i've read so far, the cluster works on a disk level and the only way to accomplish what is needed for SQL here is to go back to the SAN group and have them make 2x SAN disks visible instead of the one I have partioned. I was hoping there would be a simpler way to do this from within windows. I have been playing around with mountpoints instead of drive letters in the hopes this would fool the cluster, but no luck.

Hope the above makes some kind of sense.

Cheers,

Unstable W2k8 Cluster, clussvc.exe stops responding

I’m in charge of Root Cause for the W2k8 clusters for our company. About a couple of months ago I was made aware of a problem where on occasions these SQL clusters running W2k8 Enterprise stop responding. When I was made aware of it I was able to run cluster commands from the passive nodes. What I saw were the groups in an online pending or offline pending or failed. I could not manage the cluster unless I terminate the clussvc.exe on the active node that owns the resources. Once I do that, the cluster fails over. I’m unable to determine what is causing the resources to fail in the first place because there’s nothing in the event logs to indicate an issue occurred before the resources had issues beside the fact that the resources failed themselves with event ID .

Log Name: System
Source: Microsoft-Windows-FailoverClustering
Date: 7/30/2013 5:16:19 PM
Event ID: 1069
Task Category: Resource Control Manager
Level: Error
Keywords:
User: SYSTEM
Computer: Servername. Domain.name.Net
Description:
Cluster resource 'SQL Server (xxxxxx)' in clustered service or application 'SQLGroupxxxxx' failed.

After this happen the cluster becomes a zombie until I can kill clussvc.exe and make it failover.
I’ve opened a case with Microsoft. Complete crash dumps have been enabled with notmyfaul but we have been unsuccessful with any root cause regarding any dump analysis. It is now in the hands of Microsoft, level 3.

Add 2nd Node in Avaialability Groups Cluster

$

Hi,

I have 1 node windows 2012 cluster which is being used for SQL Server 2012 Availability Group. I node Cluster is working fine.
Now i want to add 2nd node in cluster to have Failover Availability Group.

On 2nd Node i have attached Drive and give Same volume as in Node 1.

Node-1    D:\
Node-2    D:\

As in avaialbility group each node has its own disk / NO SHARED DISK.

To add node i open failover manager on Node 1 and click add node, give 2nd node name and add node process started and end with some following warning.

The resource Cluster Disk 1 is not being considered for the disk witness because the resource is not valid as a disk witness.
No appropriate disk could be found for the quorum disk.
Configuring the cluster for no cluster resource.
The cluster has an even number of nodes. Consider changing to the Node and Disk Majority quorum configuration to improve cluster availability.

Node-2 added in cluster but issue is that in failover cluster --> Storage only Node-1 storage show as online and Node-2 Storage show as Offline.
try to bring it online but fail to bring it online.

When i check storage physically on Node 2 its not presented as D:\, when check in disk management it show as reserved.

please tell what could be an issue and how to fix it.
thx

Win 2008r2 Cluster (CSV redirected)

$

We have a 3 node Production cluster connected to an MD3200i ISCSI SAN.  Suddenly 5 of 6 Shared Volumes are listed as redirected and cant turn the redirection manually.  I tried to search for a solution and took hours trying things out such as checking NTLM access, Windows Services, IP Connectivity, etc but no success.

This is our setup:

ISCSI SAN (dual) 4 Port Controllers

All servers have two dedicated NICS for ISCSI ONLY and each NIC is connected directly to a ISCSI Port.

IP settings as follows

NODE A (NIC 1 - 192.168.101.1) Connected to ISCSI Controller A (Port 0 - 192.168.101.3)

NODE A (NIC 2 - 192.168.101.2) Connected to ISCSI Controller B (Port 1 - 192.168.101.4)

NODE B (NIC 1 - 192.168.102.1) Connected to ISCSI Controller A (Port 1 - 192.168.102.3)

NODE B (NIC 2 - 192.168.102.2) Connected to ISCSI Controller B (Port 1 - 192.168.102.4)

NODE C (NIC 1 - 192.168.103.1) Connected to ISCSI Controller A (Port 2 - 192.168.103.3)

NODE C (NIC 2 - 192.168.103.2) Connected to ISCSI Controller B (Port 2 - 192.168.103.4)

Another NIC on each node is setup on a differenct network for cluster commuication (connected to the same switch so they can ping each other)

NODE A (10.100.100.3)

NODE B (10.100.100.2)

NODE C (10.100.100.1)

And another NIC on each node for intranet connectivity (192.168.1.X) all nodes ping each other on this network.

What things could I check why I have redirected access?

Thanks

Cluster-Aware Updating show no updates

Hi,

Im trying out Cluster-Aware Updating with windows server 2012. Have configured the clusterad its working, then i run the "cluster updating readiness" tool, and this shows only green, only warning on proxy configuration, but there is no need for proxy to connect to the internet.

Then i run the "Preview updates for this cluster" and it shows "no updates found".
I also did a windows update on the hyperv nodes, but no updates found.

Then i run the script from http://blogs.technet.com/b/cedward/archive/2013/05/31/validating-hyper-v-2012-and-failover-clustering-hotfixes-with-powershell-part-2.aspx and this shows many hotfixes and updates that should be applied to both the hyperv hosts and cluster.

So am i missing something in the cau, isn`t this what im supposed to use ?

Thanks for answers.

NLB RPC Errors causing server to need reboot

$

Hi Technet,

We currently have a 4 node Windows 2008 R2 NLB with multiple NICs in each and every so often everything stops working. The issues we have seen are listed below

  • The NLB manager is unable to connect to all of the server (RPC Server unavailable)
  • The below error in the event log on all 4 servers at the same time

This computer was not able to set up a secure session with a domain controller in domain due to the following:
The RPC server is unavailable.
This may lead to authentication problems. Make sure that this computer is connected to the network. If the problem persists, please contact your domain administrator.

ADDITIONAL INFO
If this computer is a domain controller for the specified domain, it sets up the secure session to the primary domain controller emulator in the specified domain. Otherwise, this computer sets up the secure session to any domain controller in the specified domain.

  • The boxes are unable to contact database servers
  • Client calls fail to NLB with RPC Server unavailable

A reboot fixes the issue, but trying to restart the NLB with the following commands does not.

nlb.exe stop, .

nlb.exe reload

nlb.exe start

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Cluster Service mistakes SQL2008R2 for SQL2012 ?

$

Hello,

I bingoogled without success, so I post here :

I have a Windows 2008 R2 Failover Cluster with several clustered SQL instances, both 2008R2 and 2012.

All work fine but one 2008R2 that cannot do FailOvers :

- on the Node of the initial installation ("InstallFailoverCluster") it works

- on every other Node ("AddNode") the SQL Server Resource fails

The Cluster Logs on the affected Nodes show that :

- the MSSQL$.... Service is started successfully (SQL ERRORLOG indicates successful Instance startup)

- the Resource DLL (sqsrvres) connects to the Instance and attempts to "EXEC sp_server_diagnostics 20"

- this fails because the procedure sp_server_diagnostics is not available in SQL2008R2, only in SQL2012

- after several retries the DLL stops the Instance and sets the Resource to "Failed".

All other SQL2008R2 Instances of same Patch Level work fine on all Nodes.

The Cluster is Windows 2008R2 with recent SP/Patches

The affected Instance is SQL2008R2 SP2CU6 but had the problem also on RTM before patching.

Since the Cluster Service / Resource DLL is doing the mistake I post this here. I will also look for an appropriate SQL forum.

Access denied when remotely trying with Get-NlbClusterNode

$

When I locally, on the SMTP Cluster run this command:

Get-NlbClusterNode

I get the output I need.

But if I try the same from a remote server (same network and domain) I get an:

[smtp-s001a]: PS C:\>Get-NlbClusterNode Accessis denied.(Exceptionfrom HRESULT:0x80070005(E_ACCESSDENIED)) +CategoryInfo         : +FullyQualifiedErrorId: AccessDenied,Microsoft.NetworkLoadBalancingClusters.PowerShell.GetNlbClusterNode

Why is that? It is ONLY the "Get-NlbClusterNODE" command that gives me access is denied. "Get-NlbCluster" for an example, works just fine.

I am connecting as a Domain Administrator (which is a member of the Local Administrators Group on every node). Same account used remotely when I log on locally, where it works locally.

Any advice?

SOFS hardware setup advice please

$

Hello,

I'm looking for some advice on setting up a SOFS cluster,  the following is what I have in mind:

x2 HP DL380p servers running Server 2012 Datacenter and HyperV, a 10Gb network card in each

10Gb switch

x2 HPDL380p servers running server 2012 standard for SOFS cluster, 10Gb network card in each then also either FC or SAS

HP P2000 G3 connected to each SOFS host via FC  or a HP D2700 JBOD connected to each host via SAS

Which would be the better option?  I don't want overkill, however I would like good performance at a decent cost.

One more question,  for the best possible resilience would a P2000 with a D2700 attached or just two D2700's be ok? I don't like the idea of losing 50% space but it looks like mirroring is the only option.

Thanks

Ross

Failed to access sector 34 on physical disk **** The requested resource is in use

$

Server 2012, 2 nodes on VMWare, setup correctly.

When I run the validation, everything comes back fine except storage, with the error: Failed to access sector 34 on physical disk **** The requested resource is in use

3 drives, 1 for database, 1 for logs, and one for Quorum Witness. All are NTFS, healthy, and automatically failover on a reboot of either node.

I have tried to clear persistent reservations, but that fails with permissiondenied.

Another thing I noticed, is that on one of the nodes, it shows I have two clustered roles, but they don't show up in the roles.

Thoughts?
