Cluster went offline despite quorum - is this scenario normal?

$

We have a 3 node cluster for an AAG. 1 node is the primary SQL server, 1 node is the secondary SQL server and there is a quorum node.

Last week the secondary SQL server had an issue where it was likely still pingable but not really responding to any other requests, essentially it had hung.

The cluster went down for this time along with SQL and only came back up when this server was restarted.

Upon attempting to open up Cluster Manager whilst the secondary server was in hung state – there was an error stating Unable to start cluster and something about could not connect to wmi on the server that had hung.

My questions are: Is this normal behaviour? There was quorum with the primary and quorom node still being online. So I would have thought the cluster would have remained online.

If the secondary server had gone completely offline i.e. it was powered off – the cluster would have remained up?

Thanks

No option to add IP address resource to WSFC cluster

Following instructions to configure an availability group on Azure SQL Server virtual machines in different regions, I'm trying to add an IP address resource to the cluster as described at step 10, but the option is not available.

The Add button is grayed out on the cluster properties dialog in the Failover Cluster Manager management console and I don't know why.

The cluster is online with two existing nodes. All nodes are running Windows Server 2016 Datacenter installed from Azure Marketplace offer SQL2016SP2-WS2016, sku Enterprise.

Cluster Validation Fails

Our network admin created a cluster  (vmware using shared disks seetings) so we can install SQL Server AlwaysOn.

Found out during the SQL install that it needs to pass cluster validation.  When we test fail over, it works fine (switches from one disk to another). However, it fails on cluster validation. What are we missing here?

Thanks

List Disks To Be Validated

Description: List disks that will be validated for cluster compatibility.
Start: 4/16/2020 9:26:27 AM.
No disks were found on which to perform cluster validation tests. To correct this, review the following possible causes:
* The disks are already clustered and currently Online in the cluster. When testing a working cluster, ensure that the disks that you want to test are Offline in the cluster.
* The disks are unsuitable for clustering. Boot volumes, system volumes, disks used for paging or dump files, etc., are examples of disks unsuitable for clustering.
* Review the "List Disks" test. Ensure that the disks you want to test are unmasked, that is, your masking or zoning does not prevent access to the disks. If the disks seem to be unmasked or zoned correctly but could not be tested, try restarting the servers before running the validation tests again.
* The cluster does not use shared storage. A cluster must use a hardware solution based either on shared storage or on replication between nodes. If your solution is based on replication between nodes, you do not need to rerun Storage tests. Instead, work with the provider of your replication solution to ensure that replicated copies of the cluster configuration database can be maintained across the nodes.
* The disks are Online in the cluster and are in maintenance mode.

Windows Server Failover Clustering

Hello good afternoon,

I do not know if it is the right place, but I have a doubt, we want to create a Clustering Failover with Windows Server 2019, my doubt is that if it requires a special version to perform the implementation (Standard, Enterprise, Datacenter).

Anyone know about this ??

Regards.

Does a Hyper-V Replica server require additional licensing

I realize that with Windows Server 2012 Standard, I need 2 server licenses to run a Hyper-V host with 4 virtual machines (you get 2 VM’s per license).

I am thinking about purchasing another identical physical server and configuring it as a Hyper-V Replica Server.

If I want to replicate my existing host and VM’s to another Hyper-V Replica server, do I need any additional licensing?  I wasn't sure since this server would only be used if my primary Host would happed to go down.

Thanks in advance.

I use a domain user which has local administrators right in the computer, however when connect to the failover cluster got the above error.

after giving the domain user "Domain Admin", the user can connect to cluster successfully.

If I don't want to give Domain Admin to the user, what else permission is should grant to this user so that it can access the cluster ?

it is using windows 2016

Chkdsk scan needed on volume

I have a 2016 Failover cluster using CSVs.  One of my CSVs indicates "Chkdsk scan needed on volume"  Is it just that simple? Should I run chkdsk against the CSV in question or are there other factors I need to take into consideration?

Thanks

Automatically connect to Cluster in Failover Cluster Manager

$

I am very new to the Microsoft Cluster.

I have setup a two node cluster in ESXi with a Quorum Witness and some file Server Roles.

I have some few questions:

1. The Quorum drive and other File Servers are available in the active node but if I open Server Manager > Tools > Failover Cluster Manager, I don't see the clusters automatically connected. Is there some settings or way that can connect to the cluster on the Failover Cluster Manager Window automatically without having to click Connect to the cluster.

2. If I drain all the Roles from active node to the passive node and shutdown the first node to test the failover clustering. The  second node is able to failover and receive the quorum witness drive and other file server drives but if I open the Failover cluster Manager page to manage the cluster, I cannot open the cluster as I need to click on connect to the cluster and type the server1. Since the server is shutdown, I cannot connect to cluster. Since I can see the quorum drive and other file server drives which means the cluster is running fine but just I cannot manage them from Failover Cluster manager Page. Is there a way to automatically connect to the cluster on the cluster Manager?

Thanks

No Disks Found

Hi All,

I am completely new to High Availability (Clustering). I have set up a lab and I am following the MCSA 70-710 course.

I am attempting to create HA Clustering and this far I have created a SAN with 4 iscsi drives connected to the SAN. I have created 3 server 2016 Nodes and one client machine.

I have installed iscsi initiator and cluster roles on Node 1. I have initiated an iscsi connection from this node and have successfully connected. I have installed the cluster after verification which brought back no errors. The cluster has built and installed successfully. when I attempt to add a disk I keep getting a message "no disks suitable for cluster disks were found. For diagnostic information about disks available to the cluster, use the validate a configuration wizard. I have destroyed the cluster and started from scratch but I still get the same error continuously. I must be missing something but I have no idea what.

Please could someone help me.

S2D setup with cache drive

I've got 2 server in a cluster running 2019 and I am trying to setup Storage spaces direct. Each server has 4 SSD drives for the S2D pool as well as a NVMe drive.

When I do Get-PhysicalDisk it shows the disk and appears to be right. However I do notice the meida type is ssd and not nvme which I don't see as an option. Does that matter?

Clearing cluster config from a node

Hi,

I'm trying to clear some cluster config from a server using the clear-clusternode command but get the following error

Could not load file or assembly 'file:///C:\Windows\Cluster\FailoverClusters.ObjectModel.dll' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.

Should this just be available given the failover clustering feature is installed?

This is running on Server Core 2016.

Gerry.

Pause - Drain Roles fails, but all roles move to the other node

I have a 2 node cluster in a box from DataON. It's been working fine for many years. I am attempting to drain the roles on node 1 and it looks like all the roles migrate to the other node, but it still comes back with an error saying the node wasn't completely drained. It's almost as if there's a role it thinks it needs to move but isn't there. I've removed and added roles throughout the course of time.

It says to check information details which says to check each role, but all current roles move fine.

s2d cluster one node failure

dears,

i have 4 physical nodes 2019 windows deployed in an s2d deployment.

pool and volumes were created.

vms were created across the nodes.

recently i faced an issue with one node (node1), therefore i migrated the vms from this node to the remaining.

and now im planning to re-install windows on this physical server ( im not repalcing it with a new one)

just re-install and reconfigure.

can you advise on the procedure?

is there any downtime if i remove the node? knowing that its disks are included in the pool?

will i have any loss of data?

what is the best practice

thank you in advance

adding 3rd node to fully functional windows failover 2016 cluster; ISCSI setup

$

We have reviewed one of our current production setups and have decided to go from a 2node setup to a 3node failover cluster setup.
It's a fully functional active/active setup and makes use of 6 clustered roles; each which has it's own cliënt acces point and disk (LUN) connected with ISCSI. We use snapdrive to do our lun management.

I have setup the 3rd node, but I am running into a block when to make the storage available. I have made sure that it can reach the storage san, but I am unsure at which point i should try to connect the actual luns.

I tried to first fully prepare the node and connect the shared storage but then it says i can't add the storage because it is already in use. (which makes sense to me).

If i first join the node to the cluster and then try to connect shared storage it suddenly tries to connect it to all 3 nodes. I thought that maybe he would notice that he already has a certain lun on two of the three nodes and that he would maybe just connect it to the third node but it won't give me the correct disk letter as available option because the cluster probably tells snapdrive which driveletters are already in use by the cluster.

Has someone maybe an idea which approach i should take? I am starting to doubt this actually possible by using snapdrive. Maybe i should start to work from storage side instead of host side?

Hope you guys can help me in the right direction.
Kind regards

SQL 2019 - Install HA

Our network admin created a cluster  (vmware using shared disks seetings - 2 nodes) and we plan to install SQL Server AlwaysOn AG.  After some trial and error, it now has passed the cluster validation and I can continue to install SQL.

Are my next steps correct?

[1] Install SQL Server 2019 on both nodes as a STAND-ALONE install

[2] Then configure AlwaysOn Availability Group after.

Reason I'm asking is that on the SETUP, there is an option  for a "NEW SQL Server Failover cluster Installation"so I'm not sure which one to use.

Thanks

Cluster to Cluster replication VMware

Hi All

I am looking to see if there is an know issue with using Windows cluster to cluster replication running on VMware hosts.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/storage-replica/cluster-to-cluster-storage-replication

I have read the above but I don't see any thing that says it is or isn't possible to use replication with VMware. I would presume once the pre-req are meet there should be no issue but just want to confirm.

Thanks

Do failover clusters require Storport-controlled disks?

$

I have an MPIO-like product that virtualizes disks on a virtual (non-Storport) bus in Windows.  Within Failover Cluster Manager, these disks cannot be added to a cluster.  If the disks are just attached to an FC HBA (with a Storport miniport driver), they can be added to a cluster.   Do failover clusters require Storport-controlled disks?

Advise on running a File system role on a particular node

Greetings!

We are running a 4 node file cluster on Windows 2012 R2. Due to the increasing workload we are adding 2 more nodes in the server. Now these two new servers, though same make, have single socket (6 logical processors and 6 cores) whereas the existing file cluster nodes have two sockets(12 Logical processors and 12 cores). This is a supported configuration.

We want one of the file system role say Role1 to never fail on the two new servers. As its facing performance issues and would like to run it on either of the 4 existing nodes. In the preferred owners sequence for the role FS1 we would add the two new servers in the bottom of the list.

Please advise in a case of a scenario of a failover and a failure triggering a failover what configuration changes would be required to be assured that the Role1 would never fail on the two new servers.

Thank you!

- Shl
