Error Code 0x80071398

I just added the third node to my cluster and when I am trying to move the ownership of a cluster shared volume to it I am getting the following error

0x80071398 cluster shared volume error: the operation failed because either the specified cluster node is not the owner of the group, or th enode is not a possible owner of the group.

Not sure what this means. The processor is a bit different and I am able to move VMs to it but not the CSV ownership.

Thanks,

Add 2012 R2 node to an existing 2012 cluster

hello all. I currently have a 4 node 2012 cluster (nodes 1-4). I have 4 more new nodes loaded with 2012 R2 (nodes 5-8) . I would like to add nodes 5-8 into the existing 2012 cluster housing nodes 1-4, one node at a time, once nodes 5-8 have been added, I want to remove the existing nodes 1-4, one at a time, reload them with 2012 R2 then re-add them to the cluster. Is this scenario possible?

The existing cluster is a Hyper-V cluster only.

Server 2012 R2 cluster error "An item with the same key has already been added"

Using the Configure Role option in Failover Cluster Manager on Server 2012 R2.  After selecting Virtual machines from the list, upon enumeration I receive the following error:

"An item with the same key has already been added"

I've looked at other solutions to this issue but they are unrelated.  Some mention firewall configuration and others network card guid on VM.  I can create a blank VM (no operating system and no NIC) with the same results.

This error appears even if there isn't a non-highly available VM to be converted to highly available (which i've run in the past and it will just enumerate nothing).

Tied to this error is the fact that when I do try to create a highly available virtual machine, the wizard completes but the virtual machine is created as non-highly available with no error given.  This is when I tried the Configure Role option and get the error listed above (assuming both are related to each other somehow).

Trying to setup a redundant server for server 2012

have some questions  regarding creating a backup for an all in one server. The server has active directory, DNS, the file server and everything on it. I'm trying to create a redundancy setup in case of failure. So I was reading about failover clusters and this seem to be what I need to do. I'm just a little bit confused. What is the difference between using hyper V and using clusters?

When I create a cluster and add servers to it, what exactly happens? For instance simplest case I have the main server with all the data. Now I bring in another machine with nothing on it. I install windows server 2012 on it and add it and the other computer to a cluster. Does the data from the main server automatically get copied onto all the servers that are part of this cluster? At this point if one server fails will the other one take over?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Cluster Aware Updating Scheduling

I am having an issue with Cluster Aware Updating (CAU) on Server 2012 and Server 2012 R2. If I schedule self-updating and specify a time other than 03:00 (e.g. 07:00) in the wizard, when I get to the end of the wizard the confirmation page shows the schedule to be 03:00. if I click apply then the schedule does appear to be set to 03:00.The same behaviour occurs whether I am setting up CAU for the first time or editing an existing configuration. Thus it is not possible to schedule cluster aware updating for any time other than 03:00.

I am assuming that this is a bug, although I am open to suggestions if anyone else can think of a possible cause. I haven't found this mentioned anywhere online and I have been to MS Connect and Server 2012 is not listed as open for bugs. Has anybody else been able to reproduce this? Any idea how to report a bug if connect is closed?

I have two clusters, one on Server 2012 and one on 2012 R2 and I can reproduce on both:

OS Name    Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Datacenter
Version    6.2.9200 Build 9200

OS Name    Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter
Version    6.3.9600 Build 9600

I am happy to supply further details if anyone is willing to help.

Thanks

NLB Manager donot show the other host

Hello

a few months back, I installed and configured Windows NLB on a couple of exchange CAS servers and  everything seems to be working fine (still working fine). However, the other day when I opened NLB manger on each servers to find that one of the HOST is missing from the cluster. If I open NLB on server1, Server2 is not listed and viceversa. I tried to refresh the screen to no avail. I tried to re-add the missing host on to the cluster I get " The specified host is already part of this cluster". NLB is running in multicasrt mode seems to be working fine, i just cant see both servers. Is there any way I can rectify this?

I am running windows 2008R2 Sp1. (it could see it fine in the past not now)

Choosing the correct clustering method

Hi, I currently have a small 3 server environment (win 2012), 1 PDC, and 2 Servers running hyper-v. I have 8 or so hyper v machines on one of the servers and using hyper-v replica to replicate all of them to the other server. I woud like to upgrade this to something that will provide hot migration/failover for the VM's. I was considering having a storage cluster with 2 machines for storage and a VM cluster with 2 machines for migration. My confusion is what to cluster? Do I cluster the physical machines, the VM's or both? Note SQL server is running on one of the VM's.

Cluster log and etl files

We have a windows 2008 R2 cluster.

A few days ago, we had issues with this cluster.

I openend the cluster log, hoping to find the cause of the problem. But the last entry in the cluster log was dated 14 december 2013. Also the modified date of the failoverclustering.etl files is 24 december 2013. This is also the last time the cluster was restarted.

(Yes, we are a little behind with the MS security patches)

If i have read some articles correct, then the Windows Event Tracing (ETW) process on each node should constantly writes to etl files. Correct?

If that's the case, what could cause this problem?

In windows 2003, the cluster.log was automatically generated. Do i have to create the cluster.log manually in W2kR2?

Thanx.

Changing Node Name, Cluster Name and SQL Virtual Network Name

$

I plan to rename 2 Cluster Node names (2-Node Active/Passive Cluster in SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008), Cluster Name and SQL Server Virtual Network Name.

I see few articles here and there with pieces of information, but is it possible to have actual steps and pre-req on how to do it

1. Will I need New IP Address for new names or I can MAP 2 names to 1 IP Address?

2. What should be the chronological order to complete this name change process?

3. Since the SQL Is already installed, will this in anyway affect its functionality?

Thanks in advance!!

Inquiry about update KB2878635

Hello, i am wondering if the compound update KB2878635 is strictly concerning Windows 2012 or if a Windows 2012 R2 package will be available, because we are confronted to deadlocks in the Resource Hosting Subsystem (RHS) process, and CSV failures" (the only difference is that in our testing environment we do not have backups)

So far we have installed all updates indicated in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2920151/en-us

and specifically the update KB 2913695

and followed the procedure to disable ODX.

Because it addresses exactly our issue, but fails to resolve the problem (CSV stuck in pause state during SAN failover)

Bottom story, we are investigating other possible updates. If anyone is knowledgeable on future updates that may go public in the next weeks, i am eager to know...

I am too following this thread but didn't finish yet to process all info...

Server 2012 Failover cluster. Make two VMs stay on the same node

We have a unique situation where i need two machines to stay on the same node. Its a 4 node cluster with 30+ resources but i want to make sure two boxes are ALWAYS on the same now. If one migrates to another node the second needs to follow. Is there a way to do this?

Windows 2012 R2 Failover Cluster Hyper-V Invalid Class error when I'm trying to create VM

$

Hi, in my test lab environment I created Windows 2012 R2 Failover Cluster with 4 Servers to get Hyper-V HA.

I had no issues with Windows 2008 R2 or Windows 2012 before in same setup (2 NIC, FC HBA, SAN storage), but this time I cannot creat VM using Failover Cluster console:

Roles - Vurtual Machines - New Virtual Machine - Select Host -> <ANY HOST>

I'm using default settings during VM creation (except setting path to VM manually to pont to desired disk).

IN progress I see disk creation and both VM configuration and .vhdx files on target disk, but after that I see "The Operation has failed. An error occured creating a New Virtual Machine. Invalid Class.

In fact I see virtual machine in Hyper-V Manager and it's fully functional, but not added to Failover Cluster Roles. When I use Configure Role - Virtual Machine to see eligible machines - it's not there.

Cluster Validation says that everything is OK.

I wasn't able to find anything in Eventllog(s) or %SYSTEMROOT%\Cluster as it was in Win2k8.

How should I troubleshoot this issue ?

Windows 2008 R2 Cluster failover issues

$

Hi all,

I used to be quite proficient in Windows 2000/2003 clustering. I wanted to update my skill set so

I have setup a 2008 R2 cluster at my home. Please note that this is in my home and is not exactly an ideal production environment. I like to setup services at home for practice. (I will REALLY miss Technet)

For my shared storage I am using a Windows 2012 server with iscsi target. (HP DL360G5) On all servers I have iscsi going over the same teamed nics as the network traffic. I know that this is not recommend/supported but it "seems" to be working ok for me.

Both nodes are domain controllers. Both are also DFS servers and they run DFS replication. They are both also DNS servers. None of these services are clustered.  (The servers are an ML330G6 and DL385G5)

On node A I am also running Exchange 2010 (not clustered)

I have both nodes connected via iscsi to the virtual drives of the storage server.

The iscsi target has 3 shared drives for my clustered services.

DHCP and Print. (I also created a quorum disk to play with disk only Quorum)

After many trials and tribulations I am almost steady. I can failover back and forth between the nodes all day from the cluster administrator tool successfully. I have also tested failing over to node B and then booting node B. The resources successfully transfer over to node A. My issue is when I have node A as the owner of the resources and then I boot node A.  The resources don't failover to node B. The cluster admin tool (running on node B) eventually hangs. Node B is able to finally grab the resources when node A comes back online. (By itself. I don't force any failing over when this happens)
I have tried changing the Quorum mode. I tried Node and Disk Majority (using one of the shared storage disks as a witness). I tried Node and File Share majority (using the netlogon share on the storage server as the witness) and I also tried Disk Only. (created a third quorum shared disk)

Any clues?

Thanks.

Access is denied messages in Win2012 R2 Failover Cluster validation report and CSV entering a paused state

Been having some issues with nodes basically dropping out of clusters config.
Error showing was

"Cluster Shared Volume 'Volume1' ('Data') has entered a paused state because of '(c000020c)'. All I/O will temporarily be queued until a path to the volume is reestablished."

All nodes (Poweredge 420) connected a Dell MD3200 shared SAS storage.

Nodes point to Virtual 2012 R2 DC's

Upon running validation with just two nodes, get the same errors over and over again.

Bemused!

The event viewer on one of the hosts shows
-------------
Cluster node 'zhyperv2' lost communication with cluster node 'zhyperv1'.  Network communication was reestablished. This could be due to communication temporarily being blocked by a firewall or connection security policy update. If the problem persists and network communication are not reestablished, the cluster service on one or more nodes will stop.  If that happens, run the Validate a Configuration wizard to check your network configuration. Additionally, check for hardware or software errors related to the network adapters on this node, and check for failures in any other network components to which the node is connected such as hubs, switches, or bridges.

The Cluster service is shutting down because quorum was lost. This could be due to the loss of network connectivity between some or all nodes in the cluster, or a failover of the witness disk.
Run the Validate a Configuration wizard to check your network configuration. If the condition persists, check for hardware or software errors related to the network adapter. Also check for failures in any other network components to which the node is connected such as hubs, switches, or bridges.

Only other warning is because the 4 nic ports in each node server are teamed on one ip address split over two switches - I am not concernd about this and could if required split then pairs, I think this is a red herring????

Cluster Shared Volume Offline on Windows server 2012 R2

$

Hi All,

I keep getting this error on my Windows Server 2012 R2 Cluster: "cluster shared volume is no longer accessible from this cluster node because of error '(1460')". I also get I/O timeout errors as well.

In my Lab, I have 2 Windows Server 2012 R2 Hosts both running the following specs

Server Specs:

Intel Gen3 i7 Processor

64-Gig of Ram

2x Intel I350-T2 (For use with SRIOV and VMQ) --> Latest Drivers installed from Intel

My NAS device is a Synology DS1813+, which supports ODX - Latest Updates applied from Synology

The above error is constantly occurring and is taking my CSV's offline, all VMs are either paused or in a crashed state.

I know their is hotfixes for Windows Server 2012, however the problem seems to persist on Windows Server 2012 R2.

Currently I've disabled VMQ and ODX, and will be monitoring it.

I'm not backing up any VMs i.e. not using VEAM or DPM, since this is a lab environment.

Are their any hotfixes for Windows Server 2012 R2 or any workarounds.

I will also be raising a case with Synology.

Error running unsigned driver inventory and test

$

I’m working a challenge where the cluster validation tool on a Server 2008 R2 SP1 based cluster throws an error running the unsigned driver inventory/validation. It doesn’t say that there are any unsigned drivers but rather says:

An error occurred while executing the test.
There was an error getting information about the unsigned drivers installed on the nodes.
There was an error retrieving information about the Unsigned Drivers from node 'someclusternode.contoso.com'.
Shutting down

If we run the tool from other nodes it will always pass itself and 4 out of the 5 other nodes, but there will be one node that will trigger this. And the node that it fails on is not consistent.

All of the other tests run just fine, and I can’t find anything in any KB that points me in a troubleshooting direction.

Failed to online the cluster generic script resource

Environment

Cluster Nodes = two

Cluster Nodes OS = Windows 2012

Application = IIS

Query

I configured the cluster. I want to cluster IIS as failover cluster. For this I am using the following article. As per the direction of the below article I replaced both (SITE_NAME = "MyWebSite" andAPP_POOL_NAME = "DefaultAppPool") . Now when I try to online the generic script resource it failed.

Please Note: When I used the same script mentioned in the above link with default web site, it works fine.

Any comment will be appreciated. Thanks. Zahid Haseeb.

WWW service is not able to start via Microsoft Failover Cluster generic service resource

Environment

Cluster Nodes = two

Cluster Nodes OS = Windows 2008R2

Application = IIS

Query

I created generic service resources of many windows services under Microsoft Failover Cluster and they are failing over successfully but when I create a generic service resource for WWW, then the WWW service is not able to online via Microsoft Failover Cluster. It stuck in online pending.

I have noticed two things.

1.) If the WWW service is set to manual and started at passive node and I manually restart the Active node then the WWW service successfully switch over to stand by/passive node. but if the WWW service is set tomanual and not started on stand by/Passive node then the WWW service is not failing over.

2.) if I kill the WWW service manually (as a test case) on Active Node via this command (taskkill /f /pid XXXX) then the WWW service failed and is not failing over to standby/passive node.

Any comment will be appreciated. Thanks. Zahid Haseeb.
