Microsoft Cluster Validation Report

I am new to Microsoft Clustering. I tried to run a validation report on an existing cluster and it hung and ran for hours. Should I be able to run the validation report after the cluster is created? I have been told that it can only be run when the cluster is created and that does not seem right.
